Standard floppy operation

All computers with a standard floppy diskette drive will read the floppy as the computer is booting. This operation is normal as most computers have the floppy drive as the first bootable device. This causes the computer to check the floppy drive and verify there is no floppy diskette in the drive.

Computer virus scanner

If the computer is accessing the floppy disk drive when Windows starts or shuts down, this may be a sign of a computer virus. Many virus programs scan the floppy drive for viruses before startup or shutdown as many viruses only infect a computer from a bootable diskette.
