Introduction

This procedure can also be used to access and re-grease the existing flex shaft. This device requires 15 ml (1/2 oz) of lithium-based grease.

What you need

              Disconnect the spark plug wire               
  • Before you begin, ensure that the engine is powered down and cool to the touch.
  • Grip the plastic housing at the end of the spark plug wire and pull firmly to disconnect it.

Step 2

              Remove the cutting head assembly               
  • This Echo device has an included multi-tool with a T30 Torx screwdriver, but any T30 Torx driver is compatible.
  • Use a T30 Torx driver to remove the locating screw from the gear case.
  • Use a T30 Torx driver to loosen, but not remove, the collar screw securing the main shaft to the gear case.

  • Grip the cutting head assembly and pull to remove it from the shaft assembly.

              Remove the flex shaft               
  • Wear gloves when handling and greasing the flex shaft.
  • Grip the flex shaft and pull to remove it from the shaft housing.
  • During reassembly, push the flex shaft into the shaft housing. Spin the flex shaft until the square head seats itself into the clutch fitting.

Step 5

              Grease the flex shaft               
  • If you are re-greasing the existing flex shaft, wipe it clean with a shop towel or rag before reapplying grease.
  • During reassembly, coat the flex shaft with a thin coating of 15 ml (1/2 oz) of lithium-based grease.
  • Take care to not get any dirt or debris on the flex shaft.
