Dell Precision M6600
Your computer is running slowly.
Press control, shift and escape keys all at the same time to bring up the task manager. Use the down arrow labeled “more details” and examine which programs are using up a lot of CPU and memory. You can do this by looking under the columns titled “CPU” and “memory” and look for the programs with the highest percentage next to them. If there are programs that are not needed and are using a lot of CPU and memory, you can right click and select “end” to terminate these programs. By doing this, you will free up a lot of CPU and memory, which in turn will increase your processing speed.
It is possible that your Precision M6600 has a virus on it. In order to fix this on a windows operating system, you can go to the search bar and type “Windows Defender Security Center” and select it. Once it is open, select “Virus and Threat Protection.” There you should see an option called “quick scan.” In order to scan for viruses, select this option and wait for it to finish. Once done, the results will show whether your device is virus free or not. If it does have a virus, its very likely that this is the source of your slow processing speed and fixing the virus will most likely improve your processing speed.
When the computer boots up, the screen is black.
It is possible that your drivers are out of date—specifically your video driver. To update this, click on the start button and in the search box type “Device Manager”. Look through the list until you find “display adapters,” and double click it. Once it is expanded, select the name of your graphics card and a window will open. Select the driver tab at the top and then click on “update driver.” From here, you can follow the steps given by windows to complete your update.
If drivers are already up to date and the problems persist then download the Nivida PowerMizer. To do this, you can go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/feature_pow… and download the latest version, or you can Google search a download. Once it is installed, open it and click the “enable powermizer” box. Next, select the box labeled “ fixed performance level,” and make sure to select medium for both battery and mains. Once both battery and mains are on medium, select “disable overheat slowdown”. Click “OK,” and the setting should save and the problem should be fixed.
Can not handle running fast programs.
If your computer is overheating, there is a good chance that the fan is faulty and needs to be replaced. In order to do this you can follow the guide found here.
If the problem does not resolve then the temperature sensor must be the problem. The temperature sensor is part of the motherboard, meaning the whole thing would need to be replaced.
Device is Crashing due to being overheated.
Open control panel from start menu. Click on hardware and sound and then click on power options. A new window should open. Click on the change plan settings, then click on change advanced power settings. The power options dialog box should open. Select the advanced settings tab. To open the options sub-menu click the plus symbol associated with the Processor Power management. Select the system cooling policy that brings up a continued menu. Next click active from the menu. This should increase the speed of your CPU cooling fan. Select apply and then click “OK” to save these changes.
The thermal compound could be the problem because it dried out which happens every few years. To fix this problem, go to the motherboard inside the computer and unhook the fan from its resting place. Under the fan is thermal compound keeping the fan from heating up against the metal under it. Clean the thermal compound off and replace it, then put the fan back.
When hitting the keys or clicking the mouse pad, nothing happens.
It is possible that your mouse pad is completely broken. A way to work around this is to use the keys fn and F5 at the same time to disable the mouse pad. Once the mouse pad is disabled, you can plug in and use an external mouse for your device.
There is a good chance the keyboard has suffered water damage. To fix this you can remove the keys by sticking something, such as small flat head screwdriver, under them and apply upward pressure slowly. Start by only using a little bit of pressure at first and then slowly increase it until the keys pop out of place. Once the key pops out, you can use a paper tower to dab on and around where the keys were. Once the it looks dry, you can line the key up with the space it came from and apply pressure until the keys snap back into place.
