Step 2
Recognize the SODIMM sockets before replacing memory chips.
- Your computer has two user-accessible SODIMM sockets, referred to as DIMM A and DIMM B, both accessed from the bottom of the computer. The socket closest to the system board, DIMM A, always contains a memory module. The DIMM B socket may contain an additional module for improved system memory performance.
- If the module in the DIMM A socket must be replaced and DIMM B is installed, you must remove DIMM B first.
- If your computer has only one memory module, install the memory module in the socket labeled “DIMM A.”
- If you remove your original memory modules from the computer during a memory upgrade, keep them separate from any new modules that you may have, even if you purchased the new modules from Dell. If possible, do not pair an original memory module with a new memory module. Otherwise, your computer may not perform optimally.

Step 3
Turn computer upside down; loosen screws and remove memory cover.
- Close the display and turn the computer upside-down.
- Loosen the captive screws on the memory cover.

Remove the memory cover.
Step 4
Open up the retaining clips; remove the module.
- To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to remove or replace the memory module.
- From the underside of the computer, the DIMM B socket is uppermost and DIMM A is closest to the system board.
- Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the retaining clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up.
- Remove the module by grasping it at the side edges and pulling it away from the connector. Place the module into anti-static packaging such as an anti-static bag.

Step 5
Remove memory chip from its packaging.
- Ground yourself by touching a metal part in the computer chassis.

Step 6
Align the module to the module edge connector slots; insert memory chip into the socket.
- Grasping the module at the side edges, align the slot in the module edge connector with the key in the socket connector.
- Slide the memory module into the socket connector at a 30-degree angle until it is fully seated.

Step 7
Push in memory chip until it locks; replace the memory covers.
- Push the long edge of the memory module down until the retaining clips lock the module into place.
- If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure.
- Replace the memory cover and tighten the captive screws.
- If the cover is difficult to close, remove the memory module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.
