The laptop’s display will not properly activate upon the device powering up.
Check the battery, it is possible the battery charge may be depleted. Connect the device to an electrical outlet. You might need to test the electrical outlet. Check the AC adapter cable connections. If the AC adapter has a light, ensure that it is on. Connect the device directly to an electrical outlet by bypassing power protection devices such as power strips, and extension cables. Adjust the power properties. Switch the video image: if your device is connected to an external monitor, press
Adjust the brightness: Press
Connect an external monitor by shutting down your device and connect the monitor to the computer. Turn on the device and the monitor, and then adjust the brightness and contrast settings.
Click on this link for instruction on how to replace the display.
The touch pad does not properly respond to movement or pressure.
Ensure the touch pad is not disabled. Click on Start then go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Mouse. In Mouse Properties click the Device Select tab and ensure the touch pad is not disabled. Click OK and close window. If the touch pad still does not respond it is it is likely faulty.
To verify it is the touch pad that has failed connect an external mouse. If the mouse is functioning normally the touch pad is failed, replace the palm rest.
The CPU (central processing unit) overheats.
Dust can clog the internal CPU fan, preventing the fan to properly spin. A dusty fan will cause the CPU to overheat as it restricts airflow into the device. To determine if the CPU fan is dusty, open the device . If the device if full of dust, thoroughly clean the fan and other parts covered in dust.
Restricted airflow to the device may cause the fan to spin loudly as it attempts to cool the CPU. Physical placement of the device may cause restricted airflow as vents may become blocked. To solve this issue, move the device to a location away from objects that may block the air intake vents. If the CPU continues to overheat after being moved, the device may have a dusty interior.
The bearing within the CPU fan may fail, resulting in the fan not spinning. A fan with a bad bearing will spin loudly before the internal bearing fails. If this is the case, then the fan will need to be replaced.
The internal DVD drive is unable to read or write to any disk. Upon inserting a disk the computer may not recognize that a disk is inserted or may give an error saying that the disk is unable to be read or is an incompatible disk type.
Check to see if the disk that was inserted has any scratches, chips or smudges as these can cause an disruption in the reading process of the optical drive. A false reading can give an error that the disk is unreadable or is an incompatible disk type even though the disk is the correct type and is correctly inserted. If the disk appears to be in perfect condition try inserting a disk that has not had an previous problems. If the newly inserted disk works properly try cleaning the faulty disk with a microfiber cloth or other disk cleaning tool.
Dust and other particles can settle into the DVD drive over time so that when the computer attempts to read a disk is get a reading that is unclear or incorrect. If available, try inserting the disk in question into another computer or DVD drive to check whether the disk is causing the problem. If the disk runs properly on another device try using a cleaning disk or compressed air to attempt to clear out the optical drive.
If the disk has been cleaned and is able to run properly on another device but still is unable to be recognized or read by the DVD drive in question, and the drive has been cleaned through the use of a cleaning disk or compressed air, then there may be a problem with the optical drive. Check to see if the computer is able to recognize the optical drive by pressing the Windows key + R to open the Run dialogue window. In this window, in the text box type devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager window. In the Device Manager window, locate the DVD/CD-ROM Drives option and click the arrow to expand the list. If there is no drive listed under this selection then the software for the DVD drive may have been uninstalled so the drive is unrecognizable by the computer. Try reinstalling the driver software to see if the computer can relocate the DVD drive.
If the DVD drive software has been reinstalled and the drive has been relocated and is still unable to read any disks, or if the drive was unable to be relocated by the computer the optical drive will need to be replaced. Whether the drive itself is damaged or the connections to the computer are faulty try to replace the DVD drive with a new unit.
The keyboard does not properly activate when keys are pressed.
Keys may fail to register if they become stuck or if they are dirty. If this occurs use compressed air to attempt to clean under and between keys.
To verify the keyboard is not registering inputs properly connect an external keyboard. If the external keyboard functions properly it is the internal keyboard and it will need to be replaced.
