  • It’s best to wash your mask before and after handling to ensure cleanliness.
  • Lay the mask flat on desired surface.
  • Optional: Steam mask with a clothing iron to completely flatten and remove wrinkles.
  • Caution: Never leave the clothing iron unattended. Use caution when ironing as the machine will be hot to the touch.
  • Measure out the width of your face mask.

  • Using a pen or pencil, mark the insertion point for the pipe cleaners.
  • A fabric pencil would be better suited for markings as it can be easily washed off.

  • Seam rip where the elastic portion is. If there is no elastic present, then seam rip along the top portion of the mask.
  • Caution: Be mindful of where you place your fingers as it is possible to accidentally jab yourself with the seam ripper.
  • Consider using a thimble for protection.

  • Cut a 4” strip of pipe cleaner.
  • Use caution when cutting pipe cleaners with scissors.

  • Position the pipe cleaner where the markings are and fold the fabric over.
  • You may also use this as an opportunity to test out the positioning of the pipe cleaners before sewing the hem.

Step 6

  • Sew around the pipe cleaner using desired stitch.
  • A basic running stitch is recommended for ease.
  • Try on the mask to ensure the fit is right. Bend the pipe cleaners to best suit your facial frame.
