Name: Charles Earl Stanhope

  • Inventor of the first iron printing press, and a lens that bears his last name. He also invented a monochord for tuning musical instruments, suggested improvements in canal locks, conducted experiments in steam navigation, and created two calculating machines.

  • Elected a fellow of the Royal Society (1772).
